Assignment 2

Read everything before doing anything!

The object of this assignment is to use the text formatting elements in XHTML. Here is the text file which you should copy and paste into the <body> of your template file, then save as assignment2.html.

Here is the text, with line numbers for reference.

 37  State legislation has suspended the use of the SSN (Social Security
 38  Number) as a student identifer. A unique college ID number is
 39  automatically assigned to EVC student records at the time an
 40  admissions application is submitted.  Students will be required
 41  to use this ID number for all services with the college.

 43  1 If you have been officially released from your high school district,
 44  you are eligible for admission, even if you are under 18.

Here is the formatting that you should add.

The <title> of this document should be Evergreen Valley College Information
Line 1 should be a level one heading.
On Line 3, the words Only the educated are free are a quotation. Use the appropriate HTML element to mark the words as a quote. Hint: The element will automatically add quote marks.
On Line 3, the word Discourses is a citation. The entire line is inside a paragraph.
Lines 5, 10, 17, and 35 are level two headings.
You must do what lines 7 and 8 say to do: replace that text with a paragraph that welcomes students to Evergreen. It must be at least three sentences long. Use correct grammar and spelling, though I won’t take off points for mistakes in English.
The word GED on line 13 is a definition, as is the word SSN on line 37. Use the use the <dfn> element. This element is covered in the lecture notes
The words must in line 19 and required in line 40 are emphasized.
The word complete in line 23 is strongly emphasized text; use one element for this effect, not two.
The number 1 after the word older in line 12 is a footnote reference. The number should be superscripted.
Lines 30, 31, 32, and 33 must each begin on a new line; they must not become one word-wrapped paragraph.
Lines 43 and 44 make up a paragraph which should be set in smaller than normal type, and the number 1 at the beginning of line 43 should be superscripted.

This is what the solution should look like. Your lines may not break at exactly the same points as you see in this screenshot, because your screen may have a different resolution and a different window size, and your computer may have different fonts installed on it. And, of course, your welcoming paragraph must be different from mine!

You do not need the <hgroup> element for this assignment as there is no need to “group” a single heading.

Use the validator at http://validator.nu to make sure that your HTML document is valid HTML5.
Upload your document to the assignments folder on the web server.

IMPORTANT: If your file is not named assignment2.html, or if it is not in the assignments folder within the public_html folder, your assignment will NOT be graded, and it will receive a score of zero!
